A butterfly roof opens up big views to Mount Rainier
A prominent butterfly roof hovers over this 6,800-sq.-ft. home, designed by architect Rick Sundberg for a spectacular site on the south end of Maury Island. A structural system of glu-lam columns and beams allows for an open floor plan enclosed by glass doors and windows. The roof sweeps up to the south, framing dramatic views toward Mount Rainier, while the laminated beams extend 7 ft. beyond the walls to create soaring overhangs. Bold gestures like the roof are complemented by exacting details. For instance, a metal reveal at the top of the interior walls eases the transition to the ceiling and also receives hooks for hanging artwork.
