Multiple Levels of outdoor living

Schultz Miller worked with architect Margaret Menter on this basement remodel and family room/garage/terrace addition to a 1920s home in Madison Park.  The simple yet classic lines of the house now extend into the backyard, toward views of Lake Washington.  With a Jeffersonian character that would not be out of place at Monticello, the brick and flagstone terrace steps down from the kitchen and breakfast area, providing places for sitting, outdoor cooking, and dining, as well as planters that soften the structure.  The main terrace is the roof of the new family room, and the lower terrace is the roof of the new two-car garage.  This extensive remodel was done on a very tight lot, with the homeowners still living in the house.
