Asian-influenced design relies on precision details

The crisp look and quiet simplicity of this Asian-influenced kitchen required the precise execution of details and close collaboration with architect Nils Finne and local craftspeople.  Created from two rooms, the 34-ft.-long kitchen features a pair of elm furniture pieces designed by Finne.  One is a dining table; the other appears table-like, but is actually a functional island, with a 4-ft.-long trough sink and electrical outlets.  For the island to maintain its open character, the plumbing had to come up in precisely the right place, and the wiring had to slip alongside the pipes and be routed into the underside of the tabletop slab.  The dark tables play against cabinets of Alaskan yellow cedar with bamboo inset panels.
