Former garage transformed into a family kitchen

The remodel of this 1930s Mediterranean-Style gem on the waterfront in West Seattle centered on the kitchen and garage.  Architect Lyle Grant called for the existing attached garage to be converted into a kitchen and family room.  Where the garage doors had been, French doors now open to a patio with a tiled fountain.  The kitchen and family space feature graceful plaster arches that echo the curves of the original house.  Schultz Miller built a new garage into the hillside opposite the house, creating an entry courtyard. The roof of the garage serves as a basketball court for the homeowners’ three active boys. Extensive excavation had to be undertaken without causing damage to the house or the road above.
